What is Word Counter?
This counter updates live while you type and reports characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus an estimated reading time.
For Chinese, Japanese and Korean text, each CJK character is counted as one word — matching how essays and articles are usually measured — while Latin text is counted by space-separated words. Mixed-language text combines both rules.
Frequently asked questions
How are Chinese characters counted?
Each CJK character counts as one word (excluding punctuation), so a 100-character Chinese article reports 100 words.
How is reading time calculated?
Latin text is estimated at 200 words per minute and CJK text at 300 characters per minute — typical adult reading speeds. The two estimates are combined for mixed text.
